Clio Lynott is the daughter of parents who, when they are not being outright cruel, are certainly remote. Growing up in the lushness of Hawaii, she is encouraged by her Aunt Emma to delve into the history of her home; but when the weight of this history becomes too hard to bear, she marries Tommy Haywood, a movie star.
